As I was born and raised in Bawlmer, Murlin, here's a few more choice elocutional tidbits:
ill-liggle = Against the law, as in "It's ill-liggle to throw trash in da street..."
exillerator = It's that pedal you push down on to make your car go, hon.
PO - leece = Those are the nice fokes (folks) who come to your door when you do sumthin' ill-liggle in Bawlmer.
zinc = That the place where you put all your dirty dishes when you are finished dinner, hon.
warsh = That's what you do with the dishes you just put in the zinc.
IN surance = what you buy to protect your family if you get killed by the PO-leece while doin' sumpthin ill-liggle.
prolly - Probably, as in, "Yer prolly right."
"Hathahellshudinoe?" = What your mom used to say when you asked her where your ball-glove or your ball-bat was... see Oltno
Awn'n - Canvas cover over a porch or winder.
hatdags - Hot Dogs. Often eaten with musterd, unyuns and sairkraut on a hatdag bun. Often cooked on the "charcoal grill" and ALWAYS available at any Oh-ree-oes game.
ooon - opposite of off, as in "Turn that wooter ooon, hon."
At's - "That's" as in "At's what I thooawt."
Youse - you, as in "Youse need to go play outdooors."
All of Youse (or All Youse) - More than one youse - "All of youse kids go play outdooors." (The folks I heard say this may have been transplanted New Yorkers, but I'm pretty sure my Aunt Alberta used to say "youse" to all of us, and she lived in Bawlmer for all her life.
Zokay wih you? - Similar to Zarrite.
Jeet - I have also heard this one pronounced as "Jeet Jet?" meaning "Did you eat yet?" "No Jew?" is the correct response, of course (unless you DID eat, then its: "Yes, hon" if you are a woman and "yup" if you are a man). Another appropriate response is "No, waddja makeme?"
Calbert Street - Calvert Street (Calbert Street and Norf Avnew was where the OLD Poly was...)
Poly - Opposite of City (Bawlmer Polytechnic Institute, where I went to haa-skewl)
City - City Cawlidge - a haa-skewl on Thirty-Third street. Who the heck thought THAT one up? Clearly didn't go to cawlidge (prolly went to City...). Opposite of Poly.
Poly-City Game - Sight of the annual fight at Thanksgiving - used to be in Memoral Stadium on thirty-third...don't know where the annual Thanksgiving fight is now...
Memoral Stadium - Where we USED to watch the Colts and the oh-REE-oles play...
Johnny Unitas = The man who sits at the right hand of God (number 19 for the Bawlmer Colts - yeah I know it USED to be the Bawlmer Colts..but those b*(&*(^) ran off to Indianapolis in the middle of the night a long time ago)
Brooks Robinson = Sits at the right hand of Johnny Unitas.
Bob Ursay - Sits at the right hand of the devil (owner of the Colts who moved them out of town in the middle of the night - now universally hated in Bawlmer).
Hollandtown = Highlandtown - the place in eastern Bawlmer where the Colts and the Oh-ree-oes were revered (till the Colts left town in the middle of the night, because of that b&^#*$%_ Bob Ursay...well, you know the story).
By the way it IS pronounced Oh-ree-ohs, not Oh-ree-oles... :o)
Esskay = Best hatdags ever...(Esskay was actually contracted from Schulderberg and Kurdle, a meat-packing plant in Hollandtown - you could ALWAYS smell where Esskay was...see above)
Natty Boe = National Bohemian Beer... Worst beer ever...unless you live in Bawlmer, then it's the best beer ever. :o)
Block Party - What you had when all the neighbors spontaneously gathered in the back alley in Bawlmer on a summer evening, with all the kids, listening to the Oh-ree-oes game on the radioe, while eating crabs on a big picnic table covered with the Bawlmer Sun newspaper, smoking Paw Maws or Mar-boroes, drinking Natty Boe by the case and actually TALKING to one another (just ignore the occasional fistfights...)...Ahhh those were the good old days...
